Description: Everett (1794-1865), famous for his two hour oration at the Gettysburg Cemetery dedication (which preceded Lincoln's two-minute Gettysburg Address), held a multitude of positions during his life: Congressman, Governor of Massachusetts, U.S. Secretary of State, President of Harvard. In this manuscript receipt he acknowledges a donation to the "East Tennesseans". In 1864, Everett put out a book entitled "Account of the fund for the relief of East Tennessee: with a complete list of the contributors." The East Tennessee Convention of 1861 denounced secession. 5" x 4".
