Description: Illustrator/cartoonist Nast (1840-1902) is credited with iconic images of Santa Claus, Uncle Sam, the Democratic donkey and the Republican elephant. His long run as illustrator for Harper's Weekly had a major impact on politics and culture of the day. This 1893 check, drawn on the First National Bank of Morristown, NJ, is payable to the Hygeia Hotel Co. And boldly signed "Th. Nast". 3" x 8".
